About Me

Sarah Abrams is a woodwind player living in New York City. As a native of Marietta, Georgia, Sarah grew up surrounded with music from a young age. At the age of 3, Sarah began taking piano lessons, and by the time Sarah was 7, she was taking flute lessons. 


Throughout her youth, Sarah participated in various honor ensembles in Georgia, such as the Georgia Youth Symphony, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Emory Youth Symphony, and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. Through these ensembles, Sarah had the honor of performing at prestigious venues such as the Atlanta Symphony Hall and Lincoln Center. She attended Interlochen Arts Camp and the Interlochen Flute Institute, and also has attended the Aria Summer Institute, and has participated and performed in many different masterclasses. Sarah has attended and performed at three National Flute Association Conventions.  Sarah had the pleasure of studying with Sara Hydo and with Christina Smith, the principal flutist of the Atlanta Symphony while living in Georgia. 



Sarah holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music which she received in 2018. In addition to her Flute Performance degree, Sarah also received a minor in Art History. While at IU, Sarah studied under Professor Kathryn Lukas and participated in many ensembles, including many different chamber music ensembles. Sarah received the Jacobs School of Music Premier Young Artist Award, the Bernard Opperman Memorial Scholarship, and the Robert Cowles Scholarship, presented for her continuing her studies at IU. 



Sarah recently received a Master of Music degree at New York University in January of 2020, where she studied under Keith Underwood. During her time at NYU, Sarah also studied with Soo-Kyung Park. At NYU, Sarah served as an Adjunct Instructor at NYU where she taught flute lessons to NYU students, in addition to her students outside of NYU. Sarah played in many ensembles at NYU, including the NYU Chamber Orchestra, the Broadway Orchestra, and in various chamber ensembles. Sarah participated in the New York Flutists, and performed with the group at the National Flute Convention, which was held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2019. 

Sarah is a co-founder of Prime Winds, which is a Woodwind Quintet based in NYC. Prime Winds aims to incorporate music along with various art forms, and has commissioned several pieces. Sarah participated in the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival in 2019 with Prime Winds. Prime Winds has recorded Divertimento for Wind Quintet op.4 by Hanns Eisler, which is featured in Eisler's estate. 

Sarah is also a co-founder of a Flute and Horn Duo, Sage. Sage is currently commissioning and working with composers to put on a recital in 2021 with new repertoire for the instrumentation. 

Outside of flute, Sarah enjoys learning about and creating art and writing. Sarah is also a big fan of musicals. 

Sarah plays on a Powell Custom 14k Flute with a Powell 10K Headjoint, and a Keefe Piccolo. 

Currently Sarah is freelancing in NYC, playing in chamber groups, orchestras, pits, churches, temples, and wedding ceremonies and receptions.
